San Francisco Bay Area, Roleplay Workshop after school programs for youth ages 10 to 18 that include after school tutoring programs and specialized after school programs.
Tutoring Programs (top) The Roleplay Workshop offers far more than the game of Abantey. We offer individual or group tutoring for a variety of subjects. Our staff is qualified to teach science, art, social sciences, reading and writing skills and computers, as well as study, organizational, and time management skills. Tutoring is available for both single subjects (math, science, English and writing skills) and general study skills. Sign up: Sign up for either one day after school every week or set up an individual tutoring time. Saturday: Tutoring is available with Saturday programs. Your child will receive an hour of individualized tutoring from 10:30 am to 11:30 am or 5:15 pm to 6:15 pm on the two Saturdays he or she is enrolled. The cost is an additional $50 per month. After School: We offer after school programs in combination with tutoring. For an additional $50 per month (four sessions) your child will receive a half hour of one-on-one tutoring before or after his or her Roleplay session. Before program tutoring is from 3:00 pm to 3:30 pm; and after program tutoring is from 6:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Monthly: Students may also sign up for 1 hour a week of group tutoring, at a cost of $100 per month. Individual time: $45 per hour Please call Becky to arrange a day and time. Rebecca Thomas is a credentialed tutor in math, general and physical sciences, psychology, reading and writing skills and study and time management skills. Teen Tutors are availble as well. Call Becky for details (510) 654-3582. Birthday Parties (top) The Roleplay Workshop also does birthday parties. We can bring a game to your party of four to eight teenagers. The game will provide four to six hours of activity and we provide all the materials needed for the game. The cost is $250 for four students, $25 for each additional student, with a maximum of 6 students. Parent Involvement (top) The Roleplay Workshop offers free programs for parents only. These programs are designed to introduce parents to the program and the game so that they can have a better understanding of what we do here. Please call Becky if you are interested in setting up an appointment to learn more about The Roleplay Workshop. Assistant Program (top) As players become more familiar with the program, they have an opportunity to enter our Assistant Program, a volunteer, which starts at the beginning of each school year. The Assistant Program is the first step towards the Game Master In Training Program. Assistants are students who show leadership potential and are interested in helping younger students learn to play the game. Assistants are given opportunities to work closely with Game Masters and play in special games to develop a more detailed understanding of Abantey. This program is open to students, regardless of age and program experience, who have shown a level of competence with the game and a willingness to be a role model with other players. Students interested in becoming Assistants must talk with Becky by the end of each summer - it is the first test of their responsibility levels! Game Master In Training (top) For the advanced students in the program we offer a "Game Master in Training" program. This internship program gives older students the opportunity to take on more responsibility with the program, work with the younger students, and learn to run games. Once they have completed training and testing, they can work with their own group as a paid member of The Roleplay Workshop staff. The program consists of monthly seminars covering the details of the business and skills for working with younger players. GMiTs are also given opportunities to develop and practice their game master skills. Students who have been with the program for more than two years and are considered by the staff to be ready for this level of responsibility, may submit a written "resume" of their qualifications for the program by the beginning of September. Applications are reviewed by the entire upper staff and applicants are informed of the results by late September. The GMiT program begins in October. What is a Role Playing Game? (top) A role playing game can best be described as interactive story telling. Players create characters within the structure of the world and work together to solve "missions" created by the "game master". The Roleplay Workshop uses a role playing game called Abantey as a teaching tool with students ages 10 and up. While playing the game, students practice basic math and statistics, learn ecology, anthropology, organizational skills, and how to work with each other. Why The Roleplay Workshop? (top) Role playing games are certainly nothing new, in fact your child may already be playing role playing games on their own. The Roleplay Workshop, however, offers significant advantages for students of any age and skill level. The Roleplay Workshop is facilitated and directed by adults who are educators as well as experienced gamers. By mediating and directing the flow of play, the staff is able to create an effective learning environment for every student. Students are encouraged to play other role playing games on their own, as these games can be excellent learning tools. The Roleplay Workshop, however, is an excellent forum to improve those skills and to develop new ones. It also offers students an environment where there are older, more experienced students and adults who can offer advice to students on issues outside of the Workshop sessions.
