About Us
Meet the Staff

Summer is almost here!

(if you would like to be removed from this email list -- please let me know ASAP).

Spring is drawing to a close and Summer is almost upon us here at the Roleplay Workshop. We are now in overdrive getting everything ready for the Summer. Spaces are filling fast and we are really excited about the upcoming Summer Program.

Thanks!
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who responded to our call for players for the Game Master test games. The spots went quickly and there are no more spaces. Two important reminders for parents who have students enrolled in one or more of the Game Master Training sessions:

1) The sessions run from noon to 5 pm.
2) We will not be breaking for lunch. Please make sure your child has eaten lunch before the game and brings a snack for later.

Safety First!
Every year, the staff updates their CPR and 1st Aid Training. This year's CPR and First Aid training was a complete success. We had an excellent turnout. This was required for both current and prospective Game Masters, and Game Masters in Training, who did not have a current CPR/First Aid certificate. The Roleplay Workshop is committed to providing a safe environment for your kids!

It’s Official
Game Master Emeritus Cody Rose will be back from his freshman year at Rensselaer to bring his unique storytelling to Roleplay Workshop once again. Welcome back Cody!

Seiji Back?
It is rumored that Game Master Emeritus, and Abantey prodigy. Seiji Carpenter may pop in for a visit this Summer. He’s something of a legend within the Roleplay Workshop.

Abantey at Your School?

Hey parents, here’s your chance to bring Abantey to your area. As some of you may know that Piedmont Middle School and Archway Middle School both sponsor the Roleplay Workshop at their school. If you would like to bring the Roleplay Workshop to your school, we need your help. Our experience has been that schools, for the most part, ignore the hundreds of solicitations for special programs that they receive every year. We need you, the parents, to spread the word about our program and act as an interface between us and your school.

If you would like to help bring the Roleplay Workshop to your area, contact Becky at (510)654 3582 or email her at becky@roleplay-workshop.com

Summer Program - Tables are Filling Up FAST!

Parents, if you haven’t signed your student up for the Summer Program, the time to do so is RIGHT NOW! The Summer Program is filling up about one month ahead of last year's pace. Please, PLEASE CALL to confirm that space is available in the desired week BEFORE sending in your form. The time it takes for us to receive your form, in the mail, could cost you a space in the week(s) you are interested in. Remember, while you may reserve a space by phone, the space is not confirmed until we receive your registration form and nonrefundable deposit.

We are taking a Wait List for each week and there is a small possibility that we will be able to get extra space and extra staff for some weeks.

For an up-to-date calendar with available spaces please click this link:

Check to see how many spaces are left!

REMEMBER: Click “reload,” in your web browser, to make sure you are getting the most recent version of the calendar.

Call Becky at: 510.654.3583 (home office; do not call before 9 am or after 9 pm)
Email Becky at: becky@roleplay-workshop.com

There are three types of tables being offered this summer.

Regular Tables
Regular Tables are open to everyone but they are especially suited to younger players (ages 10 - 12) and players who are unfamiliar with the Abantey system. The games are slightly easier and focus more on lighthearted themes.

Teen Tables
Teen Tables are only open to players who are 13 years of age or older. The stories are more involved and serious. The players may be confronted with difficult decisions and moral quandaries and the consequences of their actions and decisions may be more significant.

Director’s Table
The Director’s Table is geared for players 13 and over who are comfortable with the Abantey System. The games are fast paced and exciting. They are often games that only Becky, the Director and creator of the world of Abantey, can run. It cannot be stressed enough that the player MUST be comfortable with the Abantey system as there will be little, or no, assistance in that regard. Do not worry if your child does not qualify for the Director’s table as it is not uncommon for kids to need two years, or more, to become comfortable with the complicated Abantey game system.

Again, we would like to remind parents to read the enrollment instructions carefully as there have been a few changes.

Session Summaries

Mondays

After School At Dr Comics
We have space for enrollment of up to 6 more students.

Becky Thomas
The party decided that they needed additional resources to get the traitorous Sakeet, Sergeant Sorge, back to the ARA for questioning. So they called to their supervisor at the ARA. As usual, the Wa'la Woman was irritable, but sent a team into the Twilight to help the party bring out the Sergeant and their injured.

Once they returned to the ARA headquarters, the party was healed and debriefed. Although they were exhausted, the ARA had yet another mission for them! Information that Toksuri gained during her questioning of Sergeant Sorge is crucial to the current crisis - the evacuation of Tabur and the events happening there and around the world. It is vital that Toksuri's information be spread as quickly as possible. The problem - with the prohibition against teleporting and the failure of the Librarian's Guild communication network, the information would need to be taken over land. Additionally, the ARA strongly suspects that forces will move to prevent Toksuri and her information from reaching the next major town.

So! The party quickly made plans for a speedy and secretive mission up the river to Repast. They broke into small groups, disguised themselves, and booked passage on a river boat. Their plan is to use the river boat for most of their transport and travel the last one hundred miles on foot and horseback. Will they make it to Repast safely? Or will the forces arrayed against them stop their crucial mission?

Tuesdays
After School At Dr Comics

We have space for enrollment of up to 2 more students.

Greg Dachner
Tuesday’s daring escape continues! After managing to sail out of the aqueduct below an ancient Feeshan city, they now face the problem of making it to the city's exit. As they climb the stairs leading up to the door that leads to their salvation, the citizens of the city finally realize they have escaped! The stairs are treacherous though and their safety is not guaranteed. Can they make it out alive?

Dominic DiGiovanni & Steve Kani
The Guards Guild caught up with the party and they were arrested and imprisoned. After explaining that they needed to find their kidnapped employer, the party was released on the condition that they be accompanied by a Guard to make sure they don’t get out of line. An Apprentice Baluud Guard named Tiva joined the characters as they continued to search for Lady Catherine. The adventurers tracked her to a strange clearing just off the main road. Near a tree with a skull and crossbones carved on it, they found a huge stone slab with a hole melted into it. After struggling to lift the odd stone slab the party discovered that it was, in fact, a door covering a vertical shaft that lead down to a large sewer system.

There, they did not find Lady Catherine, but they did find a raft of stolen goods and a large rowboat. Using the rowboat to tow the raft, they followed the sewer out to the open ocean. They paddled their way out to a small island, just offshore, where they landed on a tiny beach. The adventurers found themselves walking into a large cave that led into a long tunnel. Suddenly, they were attacked by two giant trapdoor spiders. An intense melee ensued and a few of the adventurers were seriously injured. The marked Plajet Priesten had to call on Os Plajet to assist in healing his fellow party members. As everyone rested they contemplated what lay ahead at the end of the tunnel.

Piedmont Middle School Special Education Class
Becky
Once again, Becky is running sessions for groups of special needs students at Piedmont Middle School.

This month, we began a new mission with our Tuesday Piedmont group. We were able to quickly make our new characters and got started right away.

The new mission finds our group in the town of Kiki, immediately after the refugees from Tabur begin flooding the town. The characters received a message asking them to follow the Messenger to a secret job interview. They chose to follow the Messenger, stopping to gather their equipment from their apartments. The Messenger lead them to the back entrance of a luxurious estate in the rich section of town. There, they were introduced to a powerful Feeshan man, who is a member of the Pasha Jurat. His son, Sumukhar, a Baluud/Feehsan storyteller & cavalry, has gotten into a serious heap of trouble. Sumukhar is a bit of a gambler and somehow managed to win a huge amount of money from a hot headed and powerful woman. The woman is seeking revenge... Sumukhar's father pays them to get Sumukhar out of town as quickly and quietly as possible, and to safely escort him up the road to his aunt and uncle in Repast. Will they be able to evade the watchers and get Sumukhar to his aunt and uncle's?

Having returned Luc Bouchard to Sabo, the party discovered that his wife was missing under mysterious circumstances! The players decided that they would prefer to bring in new characters for this mission. We spent a couple of days preparing the characters and then dove back into our story.

With their new characters, the players began their investigation of the disappearance of Luc Bouchard's wife, Valeria Balint. Valeria had sent a party to find her husband in Kiki, as she needed his signature to be able to sell some horses and property to pay off her gambling debts. Just 2 days before Luc's return, she was visited by 2 mysterious and threatening people while she was working out a war horse in the corral. While none of the house or stable staff saw the incident, one of the party members, a marked Baluud, had been sleeping in a tree in the forest bordering the corral. He was able to identify them as a Plajet and a Feeshan, both men, both carrying weapons.

The party also investigated Valeria's bedroom, which was a mess! According to the house staff, much of the mess was normal, which made things much more difficult. The party was able to discover broken patio doors leading to a balcony, traces of blood on the floor, balcony and the outside stairs leading to the ground floor; an empty secret compartment behind a drawer; an empty safe; that Valeria's favorite war horse was missing and signs that someone had jumped a fence on horseback, leaving the property and heading into the forest.

What will they find next?

Friday
After School At Dr Comics
Our Friday Sessions are full.

Becky Thomas
Trapped in the sewers by a hideous 30-tentacled squid-like monster, things were looking grim for our party of adventurers. It seemed as if their mission into Tabur to find Dr. Fog's assistants was doomed even before it truly began. Suddenly, a sharp eyed party member spotted a form racing toward them...on the ceiling! Just when they thought it was yet another horrendous monster, the figure threw itself from the ceiling to attack... the squid thing! It turned out to be their given-up-for-dead companion, Gulo. When they had last seen her, her fatally wounded, but coma-ed body was being taken away by a winged monster. Gulo drove the squid thing away and confronted the party. She had awaken in the city of Tabur, healed and convinced that the party had left her there.

After that small confusion was cleared up, the party continued into Tabur to find Dr. Fog's assistants. They were relieved that Gulo had rejoined them, as her strange sensory abilities allowed them to quickly find Dr. Fog's assistants while avoiding the hundreds of monsters filling the streets and alleyways of Tabur. The party's search lead them to an abandoned warehouse that was being engulfed by a vividly colored giant slug. They managed to drive the slug away from the door and raced inside. There, they discovered Dr. Fog's assistants, one grievously wounded and on coma, the other so wounded and fatigued that once he realized they were there to help, he collapsed.

The party was feeling the effects of the strange, infested waters they had waded through to get into Tabur, and so paused to use a device invented by Dr. Fog to purge themselves of the illness. They also checked over Dr. Fog's assistants to make sure they were ok. Unfortunately, the woman was infected with a virulent eel-like thing that managed to nearly kill one of the party, Oak, before they killed it. Finally, battered, exhausted and grieving, they steeled themselves for the journey back through the sewers. Knowing that they would meet yet more horrors, and possibly their deaths...

Will they make it back to Dr. Fog's and then out of the quarantine zone before it's too late?

Greg Dachner
The adventurers are not too far behind their employer’s kidnapper on Friday! They’ve tracked the kidnapper, a Black Market member named Alexie, to his mansion in a small town north of the city of Kiki. But, they aren’t the only people looking for Alexie. A group of three other adventurers have shown up in the town, and after some investigating, it appears they are following the party in hopes of being lead to Alexie. Can they manage to find Alexie before the other adventurers do?

Michael Piper and Scott Lambert
A wealthy Baluud man named Hector hires the party to escort him to a shrine near the land of Baluud. On the way there, they encounter a Plajet man who claims that the road they are traveling on is his, and that they must pay a toll to pass. In an attempt to call the man’s bluff, one of the party members, Ludwig, attempts to rush past him. The man calls out to some of his friends hiding in the woods to stop Ludwig, and an intense scuffle ensues.

The party eventually gains control of the situation, rounding up the bandits and recovering stolen goods from their base. From there, they go to a nearby guard station and report the incidents to the local sheriff. At hearing of their deeds, and for returning the stolen goods, the sheriff rewards them each with a finely made platinum ring. After resting at the inn for a night, they continue on their journey towards the Shrine. What other dangers lay on the road ahead?

Saturday (1st & 3rd)
Saturday At Dr Comics
We have space for enrollment of up to 2 more students.

Becky Thomas
Back to the Journey to find Nema's brother, who is traveling through the New Found Lands with a ship of pirates bringing havoc and ruin to the scattered settlements on these isolated islands. The party has discovered yet another small village that has been visited by the pirates. This time, the pirates only stayed a short while and left, taking with them stolen supplies and a strange woman who had recently been found by a lone shepard deep in the island's interior. The pirates left quickly because shortly after the woman and her male companion were found, the residents of the island became afflicted with a strange lassitude that ebbed and flowed daily. Worse yet, with the tide of lassitude, magic users became unable to use magic and if they tried, they suffered horrible mental damage!

Believing that the appearance of the man and woman were tied to the lassitude, the party sought out the shepard who found them. He told a strange tale of thunder and lightning on a clear day and of finding a horrible scar of burned grass in a hillside. At the center of the destruction, the party found a crater surrounded by debris, bits and pieces of packs and weapons and things that they did not recognize. When Anna, one of the magic users, climbed down into the crater to see what was there, she suddenly slid to the bottom and vanished into a hole in a shower of obsidian fragments! The other party members, realizing that they were at the ebb of the lassitude, risked their lives and used magic to pull Anna and a strange obsidian sphere from the bottom of the crater.

What will they find next?

Michael Piper and Steve Kani
The party made their way to Melphis’ estate under the cover of night. The estate was at the top of a large hill. The party members hid themselves among some boulders at the base of the hill and planned their next move. It was time to find out what this mysterious Melphis was up to. The party sent in a couple of their sneakier guys in to have a look around. They located all the guards and noticed some rather eerie and mysterious lights in the main tower. The two characters slipped out of the estate and reported back to the rest of the group.

They formulated a plan to get in. The group would sneak in, the Sakeet would bring up the rear as he was the least stealthy of the bunch. They would then move through the compound knocking out or subduing the guards, the Baluud Mage and Melphis’ brother. Once the estate was secured, they would tackle the main tower. Everything was going quite well until the party tried to subdue Melphis’ brother Nera. It turns out he was a light sleeper and a melee ensued. Eventually, Nera was knocked out but a couple of the characters were injured in the process. Suddenly there were loud screeching noises and the loud scratching of insect legs descending the long stairway inside the tower... what will happen next!

Saturday (2nd & 4th)

Saturday At Dr Comics
We have space for enrollment of 1 more student.

Assistant Tables
We have 2 tables of training for our assistant program on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays. Assistants (ages 13 and up) play in advanced games that stress the more difficult aspects of the Abantey game. They are polishing their skills in preparation for assisting with the summer program. The assistant games are ‘top secret’, and as this newsletter may ‘fall into the hands’ of regular players, the summaries for the assistant games are not included here.

Scott Seyfarth and Steve Kani (substituting for Eliot this month)
Our party began a new mission this month. They were on their way to Kiki, seeking work and perhaps helping with the relief efforts. At an inn town along the way, they met a very tired and stressed artist, who sought their help as guards in transporting artwork of his to an art show and auction in nearby Reskere, a Feeshan town. They accepted the job offer and were soon on their way, but not before being accosted by a Wa'la man who tried to purchase one of the artist's paintings. He became frustrated when he couldn't afford the artist's price and angrily departed. They proceeded down the road and stopped at the next inn town without incident.

On the road the next day, they came across some ruffians who had set up a roadblock and were checking all travelers for the taint of Amethyst - a strange and unusual dimension that most people know little about, but is suspected to be connected to the recent destruction of Tabur. The artist suddenly became very nervous, but the party was able to calm him down. Although they were forced into a fight that nobody had really wanted, they managed to get past the roadblock.

Once they were back on their way, the artist confessed that he had had an accident in Amethyst almost two years ago, and now had visions into Amethyst when he slept. These bizarre visions inspired him to paint what he saw. He showed them the painting that the Wa'la had wanted: a tall, thin Wa'la-looking creature that had been disfigured by some sort of transformation that was obviously related to Amethyst.
Suddenly, the Wa'la man appeared inside their wagon and attempted to grab the painting. Thanks to the efforts of the party, however, he was unsuccessful, and quickly disappeared once again, possibly back into Amethyst.

They kept constant vigilance for the remainder of the journey, but the Wa'la did not appear again. Once at Reskere, they set up the art show and then agreed to hire on as guards for the duration of the show. During the very first night, they spotted a monstrous creature (possibly the Wa'la?) trying to prey on the Feeshan town. With some careful thinking and a little luck, they defeated the creature. They were rewarded by the artist and by the senior members of the Feeshan town for their effort.
