Liberty’s Column

Dear Parents,
Summer is speeding along for our crew, and at Abantey the programs are well underway. I hope your kids are ensconced in summer fun. It is a kick to hear the games going on upstairs in summer session, and the traditionally high enrollment for Roleplay camping trips bodes well for great fun. See you around...

Have a great summer!
Liberty

I’m looking for Feedback

Hello all,
I’m looking for some feedback about a few things. If you could please take the time to read over the following questions and send me a quick email reply, it would be fantastic!

1) How have you liked the newsletter?
2) Would you like to see anything changed or added to the newsletter?

With the growth of our programs, I am investigating alternate sites. The following questions relate to possible changes in location.
1) Do you like having the program at Dr Comics & Mr Games?
2) What is good and/or what is bad about the location?
3) Are you familiar with the newly revitalized Oakland City Center and Old Oakland?
4) If you are, how would you feel about the program moving to that area?
5) How would you feel about the program being affiliated with a gaming store instead of a comic book / gaming store?

Here is a link to the EndGame web site. It is a location that we are considering. They have excellent information about their new Old Oakland location, as well as information about their store and programs.

Program Announcements

The Manuals are IN!
You may or may not be aware that we have been working on a major rewrite of the program manual over the last school year. It is finally done! If you are interested in purchasing one for your student, please call me!
Upgrade from existing manual: $15
Buy manual for the first time: $20

Well, our school year program finished up splendidly! It all happened so quickly. Now we’re well into our summer routine. I have worked (horrendous hours) to finish a major rewrite of the manual. I’m not sure of the cost yet - it’s gotten bigger - but if your student already owns a manual, he’ll be able to replace it for only the copying costs.

If you haven’t signed up for summer yet, or have friends who have not, please do so soon - there are very few spaces left in most weeks and some are full.
Thanks for joining us this year!

Session Summaries

Mondays

Greg
At our table in June, the adventurers were invited to the 200th birthday of the infamous Marked Plajet Professor Luscious Lucki. The crazy doctor not only invited his esteemed friends and family, but his most bitter enemies. So, it is no surprise when Prof. Lucki’s luck runs out! Murdered at the birthday dinner party, it’s up the adventurers to solve the crime! But what’s this? It turns out almost all guests have motives! Who is the culprit then? Prof. Luscious Lucki himself, of course! He faked his own death, only to provide the most entertaining party ever. Of course, the party figured that out before anyone was hurt.

Tuesdays
Greg
Home School Group
They’ve scoured the lands of Plajet for the elusive liquid laughter to save their friend Chi-chi from his curse. They tracked it down to the run-down Super Duper Plajet Ultra Fun Park, and after a few shenanigans and hang-ups, they manage to find it. With the final ingredient, they are able to save their cursed friend! They did it!

Becky
Home School Group
While investigating their aunt’s burned down home, they discovered their sister, Tenshi, hiding in the ruins. She told a story about a group of adventurers taking over the building and questioning their aunt mercilessly about something their parents left at the aunt’s farm. Tenshi was wracked with guilt, because not only did she hide from the attackers, but she also did nothing to stop them from killing their aunt! Instead, Tenshi tried to teleport to safety, but got stuck in Amethyst for what seemed like years. The party investigated the place were their parents had buried something, taken by the adventurer group, and then decided that their best course of action was to avoid Tabur and head to the place indicated on the map their parents left them.

After gathering supplies, they set out, only to quickly discover they were being followed by 2 separate groups! Could they be members of the Black Market and the Adventurer group? Not waiting to find out, the party rushed to the location on the map, where they discovered a hidden cache of incredibly valuable magic items! They were then confronted by the 2 groups following them and discovered their parents mysterious past. Before settling down, their parents were part of a famous adventurer group. On their last mission, they ended up with an incalculable wealth of treasure. The other adventurers in the group trusted the party’s parents to slowly sell the items to the Black Market and then pass on the earnings. For some unknown reason, their parents suddenly stopped selling the items to the Black Market and passing on the earnings. The party resolved the conflict by giving over a majority of the treasure to their parents ex-partners and the Black Market, figuring that their lives were worth more than treasure any day!

Becky
After School Group
Well, we left our party in dire straits - missing limbs, dying and surrounded by treasure! They tried to activate a powerful magic item, only to have it take over a party member. However, they were able to convince the entity to help them and they escaped with their lives and a little treasure to boot.

When they returned to their hometown, they were met by a horrible sight: their family compound, the School of the Phoenix, was burned to the ground, 1 parent was missing, 2 had irreparable brain damage and 3 were dead! While struggling with their losses and trying to find out who had done the heinous deed, 2 of the party vanished! The familiar of one of them, a young Silith, was able to convey to the party that a strange man had taken their friends into Amethyst Space, staked them out on a hillside, and was watching as their bodies were invaded by various horrific Amethyst things! The party enlisted the aid of a powerful mage and with much difficulty worked their way towards their friends. On their way, they attracted the attention of some huge and dangerous Amethyst entities, which (fortunately) scared away the strange man - a Marked Plajet. This allowed the party to rescue their friends. Once out of Amethyst, they visited the Plajet Temple to find the culprit and bring him to justice.

Thursdays

Alicia
On a quest into the land of Baluud to find Govi, Falcon's daughter, Baluudian hunters stop the party. These hunters and a priesten say that only if the party helps stop a strange rash of forest fires will they be allowed to travel further and find Govi. Three days into their investigation of the fires, (and after many strange and unsettling clues) the final puzzle piece becomes clear and the adventurers realize that this is all an elaborate distraction- they must journey farther into Baluud where the real trouble is, before it's too late. When the party arrives at their destination they find a priesten injured and alone and missing a very important item. The party realizes that the fires were used to draw all the hunters away from this area, and so they begin tracking the culprit themselves. Soon they find the boat she must have arrived in and wait there for her, and, in a fierce battle manage to recover the item and capture the outlaw. As a token of thanks the Baluud find Govi, who is happy to return with the party to Kiki (the city where Falcon now lives).

The after school program is over for the summer and will begin again next fall. I hope to see everyone from the Thursday group this summer and next year as well. They've been a lively, intelligent and dynamic group and I can honestly say it's been a pleasure to spend my Thursday afternoons with them. If any of the players from my table, or any of their parents have any feedback, comments, concerns or questions, please feel free to email me at Rraquel@aol.com.
Have a great summer!

Becky
When we last saw our party, they were searching the roads and towns south of Kiki for their kidnapped mother. Along the way, they discovered the intricacies of adventurers interacting with ‘mundane’ folk and the troubles awaiting adventurers who don’t pay attention when camping in the jungles! They encountered snapping turtles as big as houses and people so in awe of their wealth that they couldn’t even answer their questions! Finally, they discovered their mother, she had escaped the pirate ship and was making her way home. At that point, two of them raced ahead to take their mother home, while the other three traveled more slowly with all of their gear and packhorses. Along the way, this group encountered a strange Marked Feeshan who could change shape between humanoid and feline. He was fleeing a viscous hunter who believed that the Feeshan man was evil because he had 2 forms. The party was able to safely escort the Feeshan man/cat to the Feeshan Temple in Kiki, where they were rewarded for their efforts.

Fridays
Becky
Our intrepid party decided that it was their duty, in fact the only way to clear their names, to stop the covert group of Rogues from releasing the weapon on the unsuspecting masses of Ma’ayo. To this end, they booked passage on the very ship the covert group was traveling on. While boarding the ship, Tsel and Ama Ben discovered a cart used by the covert group to transport the weapon. Unfortunately, while investigating, Tsel became infected with a minute amount of the toxin that had been spilled in the cart! The party forged ahead acutely aware that if Tsel became injured, if her blood was spilled, she would not only die, but would also infect all those around her! Working to hide their identities from the covert group, the party befriended them and worked to arrange a way to have most of the group out of their cabin so that the party could break in and destroy the toxic weapon. Things were going smoothly, until the players forgot that Tsel could be identified by the covert group and included her in the public step of their plan. Even though Tsel was made, the party was able to forge ahead and managed to successfully break into the covert group’s cabin and destroy the weapon. Unfortunately, while they were doing that, one of the covert group’s members corned Tsel in a dining room and killed her - thus infecting some of the passengers in the dining room! So, our mission ended on a less than positive note: the party is still hunted by Covert Operations Branch of the Rogue Government AND innocents have been infected with the toxin - and need only to be injured enough to bleed profusely to die horribly and spread the disease.

Greg
Our Friday group has tracked the lost artifact The Face Of Os’Feesha, to a pirate island run by the infamous Lord Shu, Scourge of the Trade Triangle. They convince him to duel. If they win, they get the artifact back, and can return it to the Feeshan Temple. But if they lose, they’re heads will be piked to the front of Lord Shu’s flagship! The battle duel was intense, coming down to the wire, but the heroes were successful, and managed to not only save their own lives, but the lives of all those who live in the land of Os’Feesha!

Marcus and Scott
Much happened as the party traveled the road to Palgo, information both useful and misleading was found about their target, including a shocking revelation that he was not working alone. Being lead astray by one of the target’s compatriots, it looked like the party might have been in dire straits. However, careful planning and deliberate action finally obtained them their goals, confronting the man, a Feeshan, and his two cohorts in Palgo. A sudden appearance by Rahab quickly brought a moral question to the party's mind, should they honor their original deal and capture the Feeshan, or should they side with him and provide protection from Rahab and her thugs. The party chose to stick by their original deal and helped Rahab subdue the Feeshan and his partners; to what fate, who knows?

Saturday (1st & 3rd)

Becky
As the party struggled to decide what to do, the town prepared itself for an attack. The party finally decided to ford the river and come to the town’s aid. As they were pulling themselves up the far bank, they were attacked by mysterious catlike forms (they had stopped paying attention to what was coming down from the mountains). Fortunately, they were only knocked unconscious and some of their magic items were stolen. When they woke up, they found themselves surrounded by the guards of the town. They unsuccessfully attempted to portray themselves as members of the secret mining operation come to help the town and were thrown into jail. There, they were interrogated by the lead guard who attempted to force Eren En (the party’s Pasha Jurat representative) to reveal their purpose by ripping the memories from her mind. While Eren En was fighting back, she inadvertently killed the lead guard. The rest of the guards retired to figure out what to do with the party. While they were gone, Draajen Flame (a Marked Wa’la party member) prayed to Os’Wa’la for assistance and the party managed to escape the jail.

They then headed up into the mountains to find the mining town to see if they could figure out what was going on here, as their duty here was to determine who was innocent and who was guilty and to punish the guilty. In the mining town, they discovered records that detailing the ‘sickness’ that was killing the miners. It became clear that those in charge of this operation were not only aware of the dangers, but had also programmed the people to ignore the risks and keep their activities a secret. The party then ventured further into the mountains to find the mines themselves. There they discovered LaCree, a marked Wa’la sent here to infiltrate the mining colony and find out what was being mined. Draajen Flame had been sent by Os’Wa’la to find LaCree and finish his mission. LaCree, who had been horribly injured in a mining accident, had joined forces with an entity and its warriors who had been imprisoned and abandoned by the creators centuries ago. The mining operation was in fact, digging up magic items that the creators had buried here. At this point, things got messy. Draajen Flame (as a good Marked Wa’la) asked Os’Wa’la what he should do. Os’Wa’la’s answer was not a good one: kill LaCree, the entity, his warriors, his own party (!) and all of the villagers in an attempt to cover up what the miners had found! Draajen Flame followed the directions of his creator (good role playing there!), and set things up so that Os’Wa’la could incinerate the entire party along with LaCree, the entity and his warriors. Fortunately, at the last moment the party realized what was happening, and decided to take the risk of teleporting, as it gave them a chance to survive. With a lot of luck, they survived their teleport and returned to Pasha Jurat headquarters with LaCree, the entity and his warriors.

Whew!! What a great year!

Saturday (2nd & 4th)

Dominic & Michael (regular group)
The party descended further into the Mysterious Plajet Fun house. At the lower most level they found a big cave with giant doors on the opposite side of the mountain. Stationed within the cave was a Zeppelin. Some engineers that were part of the de-marked group got it up and running just in time to escape the Plajet strike team. It was decided by the party that it would be safest to attempt a landing in Tabur. However, another Zeppelin named the Lead appeared behind them, the engineers thought them air pirates. The pirates boarded their vessel and forced them to trade for supplies. Giving them much money for fuel and food. The refugees and the party discussed with the pirates that they would give them the ship they were on if the pirates would aid them in landing. Both ships headed out for Tabur. As they got in sight of the city, a Plajet ship rose from the temple and intercepted the refugee’s ship. The Pirate ship joined in to aid the party and there was a small scuffle. The refugees quickly got off and dispersed into the large city. The party was paid well for their help.
